My research investigates the ecology of species invasions – what makes ecosystems vulnerable to exotic species, and what impacts do they have? I also investigate restoration strategies designed to reverse the effects of exotic species, and other consequences of global change. Finally, I carry out studies of the basic ecology of the globally rare pine barrens and sand plains of the US northeast – these beautiful ecosystems are fascinating reservoirs of biodiversity.

I currently focus on three main questions:
- What factors influence species invasions?
- How can we restore degraded ecosystems?
- What is the ecology of our region’s unique pine barren and sand plain ecosystems?
